I spent some delicious time yesterday in the sensual practice of sun-bathing.
This is part of the wonder-full world of eco-sexuality. In this, the earth, nature becomes our lover. We make love on, we make love with the earth, with the elements.
It’s a practice of connecting with the elements in a conscious sensual way.
Lying in the sun, the awareness of the sun, of the air on my skin, of their caress.
Feeling the warmth as it moves over me.
My body consciously receiving the sensation.
Feeling it penetrate into me, the energy of life entering me as the energy of my lover.
There are so many ways to make love, so many ways to express our sensuality, so many ways to experience ourselves as erotic beings.
When we limit this to our genitals, to penetration, to orgasm, we limit so much of our experience, so much of ourselves.
In deep experience with a lover, we experience unity.
A oneness with each other that becomes a oneness with life.
This is where sexuality and the sacred merge.
These experiences, with nature, with the elements, become a space to feel this.
And the importance of it is that so many of us are disconnected from the natural world. We see it as something separate from us, something outside of ourselves.
When it’s who we are, what we’re made of.
Opening my thighs to the sun, to be penetrated by the light as my lover, regardless of what genitals I have, becomes a sacred moment.
To feel the sun, the air, the water, fill me in this way, to feel the earth hold me in this way, is to know an intimacy with life.
It’s a transcendent moment of knowing love.
It opens the awareness to some of the practices of sensuality as a path of consciousness.
And it’s all around us, in every moment.
To breathe the air in, feel as it enters my body, the feeling of love in my lungs.
The sounds around me, the sounds of life, to listen in wonder.
To feel, the air, whether it’s warm, chilly, rainy.
These are all expressions of sensuality.
When I was teaching in Ireland a while ago,0 going for a walk on a beach that started out warm and calm, and became windy, cold, then rainy, stormy.
Feeling the elements that day, the vitality, the life!
And becoming aware that sensuality is not only candles and incense and soft music.
It’s every moment of life.
The difference between this and just being outside, just lying in the sun, is awareness, presence.
Bringing ourselves into our bodies with consciousness.
Bringing our attention to what we’re feeling, to where our skin touches the sun, to where the air dances over us, to where the water flows around us.
These experiences bring us into an intimacy with life, with ourselves in life, and with ourselves being alive.
They awaken a vitality within us.
The sensations, the pulsations, the vibrations, are the frequency of the joy, the celebration of being in life, part of life.
All of nature, in all its expressions, is energy.
This awareness brings us to know that we are the same energy.
And it’s the energy of the love of life.
The Water Flow Massage coming up in Johannesburg on 6th May is an opportunity to experience this.
In the sensual warmth of a heated pool we’ll drop into the delicious connection with ourselves, with others, with love.
